Chicago Gangbanger Says Killing Is The Solution To Violence
A group of young Chicago gangbangers recently gathered with a newscast team to discuss why and how they got into gangs, and what other options are available to them.
The answer from one young man, “There is no solution to violence, killing is the solution” frames a bleak outlook for the city of Chicago and other impoverished neighborhoods nationwide. As one of the discussion members framed it, the options, as they see it, are to “Rob. Steal. Kill. It’s the only way. We ain’t grow up in Beverly Hills. We ain’t get stuff handed to us. We gotta get it.” Early exposure to gang culture, easy access to weapons and quicksand-like poverty are the conditions that result in 320 gang-related murders – or 80% of the city’s 400 total – in 2012 so far.
The anchor-slash-moderator of this discussion may have gained some new insight into what makes these young men tick, but he didn’t find hope. His take? “There just may be no solution to this problem.”
